LOCK FAULT DIAGNOSIS
Stiff or Unreliable Lock – Repair or Replace?
A lock becoming stiff does not automatically mean the complete lock needs replacing. The cause can be the cylinder, internal lock components, worn keys or pressure caused by a door that has moved out of alignment.
Possible solutions
Door adjustment
If the lock works smoothly while the door is open but becomes stiff when closed, alignment may be contributing to the problem. Correct adjustment can sometimes restore normal operation without replacing the mechanism.
Replace a worn cylinder
If the cylinder itself is sticking or unreliable, it may be possible to replace that component while keeping the rest of the lock.
Repair or replace failed components
Where internal components are genuinely worn or damaged, we identify the affected part and discuss repair or replacement options.
Security upgrade
If replacement is already necessary, it can be an appropriate time to consider whether a better-security option suits the door.
Avoid repeatedly forcing the key or handle
Continuing to force a stiff lock can place additional strain on keys, cylinders, handles and mechanisms. Getting an intermittent fault checked before complete failure can reduce the risk of being locked in or out later.
Useful checks before calling
If safe to do so, note whether the lock behaves differently with the door open and closed. Send photos of the lock, handles and door edge together with your postcode.
