DOOR LOCK FAULT

Door Won’t Lock or Open – What Could Be Wrong?

A door that will not lock or open can be caused by several different faults. The cylinder, handles, multipoint mechanism, latch or the position of the door in its frame can all produce similar symptoms. Correct diagnosis matters because replacing the wrong component does not solve the underlying problem.

Common solutions

Realign the door

If the mechanism operates normally with the door open but becomes difficult when closed, alignment is often one of the first things to check.

Replace a faulty cylinder

If the key will not operate correctly even when alignment is not loading the lock, the cylinder may need attention or replacement.

Repair or replace the mechanism

If hooks, bolts or the central gearbox no longer move correctly, the multipoint mechanism may require repair or replacement.

Emergency entry

If the door is jammed shut and you cannot gain access, we assess the safest appropriate entry method before carrying out repairs.

Useful test

If the door is currently open and it is safe to do so, note whether the handle and key operate more easily with the door open than closed. Do not force a stiff mechanism.

Send photos before attendance

Photos of the handles, cylinder, door edge and full door can help us identify the locking system and likely fault.
